A Christmas Letter from Fagernes Norway!

Per Odd Smelhus has been in contact with us and sharing much information regarding our Ranum history. I thought you might enjoy this Christmas greeting from him.

Dear family and friends in America. Christmas 2009

Looking out the window it looks like an old fashioned Christmas picture, snow on the trees and frost in the air. Global warming has taken a break and that is okay too.

It has been a good year for me and my family, except for a hole on my Retina, a heartattack on Thor - my son in law, we are doing fine, just looking forward to the Christmas celebration with good food on the table and some surprises from Julenissen. I am usually the Julenisse, but this time I have two assistant julenisser, one is 9 and one is 7 of age. They are saying that they know who the nisse was last year, so now I have involved them in a secret. We are going together this year, and nobody knows about it.

Looking back on this years events, I would like to point at one in particular, our visit to Rome Italy. My good friend Ingrid and I decided to go on a weekend tour from our house in France. This was in April and the temperature was perfect, just like a good day of summer in Norway. I have seen pictures from Rome, but I never guessed that Rome could be that interesting, breathtaking I would say. We walked and walked for three full days and saw a lot, but not all of course. It is still more to discover for another trip, or two.

The problem is, I have always said that I have to see Rome before I die. Now I have seen it, so now I should be ready to die? I discussed this with a couple from Wienna at a restaurant the last day we were there and the man said, no, you have to set up another goal, like Wienna. Okay, so that is the solution, go to Wienna before I die.

Anyway, I still have a lot to do on our database for Genealogy, I better stay alive a little longer. In fact, I think I need another life to finish this task. We have more than 30 000 names in it now and it is still fun work. It takes a lot of my time though, but I am retired from work so I guess it is good to have something to do. And best of all, I have so many good friends helping me with this, especially in America and in Canada, people with the same interests as I have. I have always said that Americans are so friendly, so easy to talk with, helpful and generous. And yes, this is addressed to You :

On behalf of my family, three daughters, five grandchildren, myself and Ingrid I would like to say MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and wish all the best for THE NEW YEAR.

Beste hilsen

Per Odd Smelhus
